Notion vs Google Drive Connector
Notion or Google Drive: which connector should you use to give Claude your documents? Setup, what Claude can read and change, and the safety settings to check.
Our verdict
Pick the Google Drive connector if your documents are Docs, Sheets, Slides, PDFs and Office files, because it reads all of them and nothing needs installing. Pick Notion if your notes, wikis and task databases live in Notion, since Claude can then search, create and update pages and database rows. If you use both, connect both; they do not conflict.
Side by side
| Criterion | Notion MCP | Google Drive connector |
|---|---|---|
| Setup effort | In claude.ai or Claude Desktop, go to Customize > Connectors and connect Notion if listed, or add it as a custom connector. Sign in with OAuth to Notion. | Customize > Connectors > Google Drive > Connect, then sign in to Google. In a chat, turn it on under + > Connectors. On Team and Enterprise an Owner must add it first, and a Google admin may need to trust Claude. |
| What it can do | Search the workspace, read pages as Markdown, create and update pages and database rows, query databases, move or duplicate pages, send pages to Trash. | Search Drive, list recent files, read Docs, Sheets, Slides, PDFs, Office files and images, check metadata and sharing, and create new files. |
| Permissions and safety | Acts with your full Notion permissions: anything you can reach, Claude can reach. Enterprise admins can limit which AI apps connect. Consider an account that only sees what it needs. | Mirrors your Google permissions. Claude can ask for approval before it uses a tool. Per-tool settings let you set Always allow, Needs approval or Blocked. |
| Cost | No separate connector fee in Notion's docs. AI search, cross-database SQL, meeting-notes queries and several comment tools need Business or Enterprise, and some need Notion AI. | No extra Claude charge. Anthropic's Google Workspace article says Drive is available to all users; check your plan. |

A connector is a ready-made link between Claude and another app that you switch on once. Both of these let Claude read your documents without you copying and pasting them. They differ in what kind of document they are good at.
Choose by where your documents live
The Google Drive connector is a file reader. Anthropic’s help article says Claude can search and retrieve Google Docs and read Sheets, Slides, PDFs, images and Microsoft Office files, and it can look up file details and sharing. It is also the cleanest way to keep a changing document in a Claude project, because Drive files can be added to private projects.
Notion is a workspace of pages and databases, and its connector is built for working inside that structure. Claude can find a page, read it, create a new page under a parent, or change a property on a database row such as a status. Notion’s connector is hosted by Notion, so there is nothing to install.
If your “documents” are mostly uploaded files, use Drive. If they are living notes, wikis or trackers, use Notion.
Check these before you connect
- Notion access is wide. Notion’s help centre says its MCP tools act with your full Notion permissions. Connecting from an account that sees only the pages Claude needs is the simplest way to narrow that.
- Drive asks first. Claude can ask for your approval before it uses a Drive tool. If you only want reading, set the connector’s tools to Blocked or Needs approval under its Tool permissions.
- Drive limits. Files added to a chat must fit within the context window, and Google API rate limits apply. Google caps exports of Docs, Sheets and Slides at about 10 MB, so very large files may arrive incomplete. Drive files can be added only to private projects, not shared ones.
- Notion limits. Calls count toward Notion’s standard API limits. Uploads through the connector are capped at 20 MiB.
- Training and privacy. Anthropic says it does not train its models on data from the Drive, Gmail or Calendar connectors. On consumer plans, content you copy from them into chats may be used if you opted in to training.
Prompts to try
Google Drive connector
- “Find the onboarding brief in my Drive and summarize the open decisions.”
- “Read the Q3 budget spreadsheet and tell me which lines are over plan.”
Notion
- “Search Notion for last month’s launch notes and give me the five open decisions.”
- “In the Content Calendar database, set the status of ‘October newsletter’ to Scheduled.”
The second Notion prompt changes data. Start with the search prompt and review what Claude proposes before approving writes.
When to use both
A common split: reference files in Drive, working notes in Notion. Ask Claude to read the brief from Drive and write the summary into a Notion page, in one prompt. Each connector has its own sign-in and its own tool permissions.
