Playwright MCP vs Claude's Built-in Browser Tools
Playwright MCP, Claude in Chrome or the built-in browser: which should you use to test your website or get web tasks done? Setup, safety and cost compared.
Our verdict
Pick Claude in Chrome if you want Claude to use websites where you are already signed in, or you do not want to install Node.js. The built-in browser in Claude Desktop is a related option, described in the text below. Pick Playwright MCP if you want Claude to test your own site in a separate, repeatable browser with no Claude browser extension and no paid plan requirement for the tool itself.
Side by side
| Criterion | Playwright MCP | Claude in Chrome |
|---|---|---|
| Setup effort | Install Node.js 18 or newer, then in Claude Code run claude mcp add playwright npx @playwright/mcp@latest. In Claude Desktop, edit the config file and restart. | Install the Claude in Chrome extension, sign in with your Claude account and pin it. For Claude Code, start with claude --chrome (extension 1.0.36 or later). The built-in browser is a pane inside Claude Desktop, rolling out gradually, with nothing extra to install. |
| What it can do | Open pages, click, type, fill forms, upload files, take screenshots, read console messages and network requests. It works from the page's accessibility tree, the structured list of buttons and links a screen reader uses. | Read, click, type, navigate and fill forms in your own Chrome tabs. With Claude Code it also reads console logs and DOM state, records GIFs and runs scheduled tasks and shortcuts. |
| Permissions and safety | Not a security boundary, says its README. Logins persist in its default profile unless you use --isolated. One tool, browser_run_code_unsafe, runs arbitrary code, so approve it deliberately. | Shares your browser's sign-ins, so it can reach any site you are logged into. You approve sites; high-risk sites are blocked. Anthropic says it is enhanced with safety classifiers but still risky. The built-in browser keeps its own separate logins and asks before acting on each new site. |
| Cost | Free and open source (Apache-2.0). Runs on your computer. | No separate charge, but needs a paid Claude plan: Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise. Claude Code needs a direct Anthropic plan, not an API key or a third-party provider. |
| Works with | Claude Desktop, Claude Code | Claude Code and Claude Desktop (and the Chrome side panel on claude.ai) |
Claude can drive a web browser in three ways. Playwright MCP (Microsoft’s plug-in) launches its own browser. Claude in Chrome is Anthropic’s extension that works inside the Chrome you already use. The built-in browser is a pane inside Claude Desktop, described in Anthropic’s help centre as having the same browsing abilities as Claude in Chrome but separate from your own browser.
The practical difference: whose browser, whose logins
Playwright MCP opens a browser that is not your daily one. That suits testing your own site: sign up as a fake user, submit an empty form, see what breaks. Add --isolated to start clean each time.
Claude in Chrome uses your real Chrome tabs and sign-ins. Anthropic’s Claude Code docs list “Authenticated web apps” as a use, such as Google Docs or Notion, without API connectors. If it meets a login page or CAPTCHA, it pauses and asks you.
The built-in browser sits between the two. Its sign-ins live in the app’s own storage, separate from your other browsers, and Claude asks you to approve a site before acting on it. Anthropic notes that anything you sign into there stays available to Claude in later sessions on that computer.
Know the limits
- Browsers: Anthropic’s support article says Claude in Chrome supports Google Chrome only. The Claude Code docs say Edge works too, and that Claude Code detects other Chromium browsers. Windows Subsystem for Linux is not supported.
- Plans: Claude in Chrome needs a paid plan. The built-in browser is rolling out gradually on Pro, Max and Team, and Enterprise owners must enable it.
- Playwright and claude.ai: Playwright MCP is a local program, so it does not work as a claude.ai web connector.
- Token use: Playwright’s README suggests its newer Playwright CLI with Skills may use fewer tokens inside coding agents, because MCP loads large page snapshots into Claude’s context.
- Sensitive data: Anthropic strongly advises against using the built-in browser for financial accounts, medical information or other people’s personal data.
Prompts to try
Playwright MCP
- “Open http://localhost:4321, click Sign up, fill the form with test data, submit, and tell me any error message or console error.”
- “Submit the contact form empty, then with an invalid email, and list what each attempt shows.”
Claude in Chrome (with Claude Code)
- “Open localhost:3000, try submitting the login form with invalid data, and check whether the error messages appear. Then read the console for errors.”
- “Go to the product listings page, extract the name, price and availability of each item, and save them as a CSV file.”
For the built-in browser, the second prompt works as written once you approve the site.
How to choose
- Testing a site you are building, again and again: Playwright MCP.
- A task that needs your logged-in accounts: Claude in Chrome, with the built-in browser as a more separated option.
- No Node.js on your machine, or no wish to edit config files: Claude in Chrome or the built-in browser.
- No paid Claude plan: Playwright MCP, which has no plan requirement of its own.
