Supabase MCP vs Neon MCP

Which database connector should a beginner use with Claude? A plain comparison of Supabase MCP and Neon MCP: setup, safety limits and what each can do.

Our verdict

Pick Supabase MCP if your app already uses Supabase, or you want login, file storage and serverless functions next to your database. Pick Neon MCP if you only need a Postgres database and like trying changes on a throwaway copy (a branch) first. Either way, start in read-only mode.

Setup effortAdd https://mcp.supabase.com/mcp and sign in with your browser (OAuth). In Claude Code, one claude mcp add command, then Authenticate in /mcp. In claude.ai or Claude Desktop, add it as a custom connector.Add https://mcp.neon.tech/mcp and sign in (OAuth) or paste a Neon API key. npx neon@latest init does the setup in one command.
What it can doDesign tables and apply migrations, run SQL, read logs, run security and performance advisors, generate TypeScript types, deploy Edge Functions, search Supabase docs.Create projects and branches, run SQL, describe tables, compare schemas between branches, prepare a migration on a temporary branch, list slow queries and suggest fixes.
Permissions and safetyRuns with your developer permissions. Add read_only=true (read-only Postgres user) and project_ref=... (one project only). Supabase warns about prompt injection and says to avoid production data unless needed.OAuth asks you to untick Allow writes, or use ?readonly=true. You can pin a Postgres role with roleName. Neon says it does not recommend the server for production environments.
CostNeither vendor's docs mention a separate MCP charge. Branching needs a paid plan, and the server shows the rate and asks you to approve before creating a billable project or branch.Neither vendor's docs mention a separate MCP charge.

Both tools are MCP servers (plug-ins that give Claude a new ability) that let Claude talk to a hosted Postgres database. The difference for a beginner is less about SQL and more about what surrounds the database.

Pick the one that matches your app

Supabase is a database plus login, file storage and serverless functions in one account. Its MCP server covers all of that, so Claude can create a table, check your logs and deploy a function in one conversation. Choose it if you are building an app on Supabase, or want one platform to hold everything.

Neon is a Postgres database with branching: an instant copy you can experiment on. Its migration tools apply a change to a temporary branch first, and only apply it to your main database after you approve. That fits beginners who are nervous about breaking real data.

Neither is a magic safety net. Both vendors tell you to be careful with real data, and both warn that Claude runs with your own access.

Turn on the safety switches first

Set these before your first prompt.

  • Supabase: https://mcp.supabase.com/mcp?project_ref=YOUR_PROJECT_REF&read_only=true. Without project_ref, Supabase’s docs say all your projects are reachable.
  • Neon: https://mcp.neon.tech/mcp?readonly=true. With OAuth you can instead untick Allow writes on the authorization page. Changing the URL later does not widen an existing OAuth grant, so re-authorize if you want write access.

Keep manual approval of tool calls on. Supabase’s example risk: a support ticket stored in your database contains text that tricks Claude into running a query you did not ask for.

Prompts to try

Supabase MCP

  1. “List the tables in my database and explain what each one seems to be for. Use read-only queries only.”
  2. “Check my project’s security advisors and explain each warning in plain English. Don’t change anything.”

Neon MCP

  1. “List my Neon projects, then show the tables and columns in the main database of the first one.”
  2. “Plan adding a rating column to the recipes table using a temporary branch. Show me the schema difference and wait for my approval before applying it.”

The second Neon prompt needs write access, so use it on a throwaway project. In read-only mode Neon hides its write tools, including project and branch creation and migrations.

Which should you choose

  • You use Lovable, a Supabase starter template, or already have a Supabase project: Supabase.
  • You want to learn Postgres on a scratch database and test changes safely: Neon.
  • You need file storage or user login from the same vendor: Supabase.
  • You plan to use it against production data: neither vendor recommends it without care. Neon says it does not recommend its server for production; Supabase says to prefer a development project or branch.

Neither vendor’s docs mention a separate MCP charge.
