What it does (plain English)

Airtable is a spreadsheet-style database: tables of records you can view as grids, calendars or forms, plus “interfaces” (simple app screens) and automations. Airtable’s official MCP server (a plug-in that gives Claude a new ability) lets Claude work with all of that. It can search and analyse data across your bases, create and update records, create new bases with tables and fields, read and create interface pages, and draft automations.

Airtable hosts it at https://mcp.airtable.com/mcp. It follows your existing Airtable permissions: if you only have read or commenter access to a base, Claude can read but not write there.

Is it for you?

Pick it if you run a part of your business in Airtable (a content calendar, a CRM, an inventory list, a hiring pipeline) and want to ask questions or make bulk edits in plain English. Because it works on every Airtable plan with no extra Airtable charge, it’s a low-risk one to try.

Because Claude sees the same bases you do, a good first step is to try it on a copy of a base, or on one where you only have read access, before letting it edit live records. It’s less suited to heavy data loads: record creation is capped at 10 records per request, and the usual Airtable API rate limits apply.

What you can do with it

  • Ask your data: “In the Content Calendar base, which posts are scheduled for next week and who owns each?”
  • Update records: “Mark every lead from the October webinar as ‘Contacted’.”
  • Build a base: “Create a base for tracking podcast guests with fields for name, email, episode date and status.” (Uses create_base.)
  • Make an interface page: “Add an interface page that lists guests with status ‘Booked’.”
  • Draft an automation: “Draft an automation that emails me when a guest’s status changes to Confirmed.” It’s saved as a draft; you switch it on in Airtable.

How to set it up

  1. claude.ai. Airtable’s Claude quickstart points to the official Airtable connector in Claude’s directory. Open it, select Connect, and authorize through OAuth.

  2. Claude Code. In your terminal:

claude mcp add --transport http airtable https://mcp.airtable.com/mcp

Then run /mcp inside Claude Code and sign in to Airtable through your browser.

  3. Personal access token instead. Airtable supports a token as an alternative to OAuth. For a read-only setup, give the token only these scopes: data.records:read, schema.bases:read, data.recordComments:read and workspacesAndBases:read. Enterprise admins can use a service account for a central read-only setup.

  4. Enterprise accounts: your admin may need to allowlist the integration before it works.

  5. Revoking access: go to your profile, then Integrations > Third-party Integrations, and remove specific bases or delete the integration.

Watch out for

  • 10 records per request. Big imports will take many calls; a CSV import in Airtable may be faster.
  • Automations stay as drafts. You turn them on in the Airtable UI. Automations with Script actions can’t be created or edited through MCP, and active automations must be turned off before deleting.
  • Interface limits. MCP can’t add filters to interfaces or edit existing ones. Recreate the page via MCP or edit it in Interface Designer.
  • Creating bases needs workspace rights. You must be a workspace owner or creator; base-level creator access isn’t enough.
  • Development bases return 403. Calls to managed-app development bases are blocked; installed instances work.
  • Tool names may change. Airtable says tool names and behaviours may change, so don’t hard-code them into long-lived prompts.

Alternatives

  • Notion MCP if your tables are Notion databases.
  • Supabase MCP or Neon MCP when you outgrow a spreadsheet and need a real SQL database behind an app.
  • Zapier MCP to connect Airtable to thousands of other apps in one place.
