What it does (plain English)
Canva’s AI Connector lets Claude work inside your Canva account. Canva lists these capabilities: search your designs and brand templates, generate new designs and content, autofill brand templates with your own data to create designs at scale, export files, read design details and folders, and create and edit designs. It also supports collaborative steps such as commenting.
Under the hood it’s an MCP server (a plug-in that gives Claude a new ability), registered in the official MCP Registry as com.canva.mcp/mcp at https://mcp.canva.com/mcp. Canva’s setup guide for Claude uses the connector inside Claude’s settings rather than a URL you paste.
Canva also has a separate Dev MCP server for people building Canva apps. Canva says the AI Connector is not the same thing; this profile is about the connector.
Is it for you?
Pick it if you already make graphics in Canva (social posts, slides, flyers) and want Claude to draft them, resize them, or produce a batch from a list. It’s a natural fit for small businesses and creators who write copy in Claude and lay it out in Canva.
Your Canva plan decides how far you can go:
| Feature | Canva Free | Paid plans (Pro, Teams, Business, Enterprise, Nonprofit, Education) |
|---|---|---|
| Connector available | Yes | Yes |
| Search Brand Templates | No | Yes |
| Autofill templates | No | Yes |
| AI-powered actions | Uses monthly Canva AI credits | Uses monthly Canva AI credits |
What you can do with it
- Draft a post: “Create an Instagram post announcing our Saturday workshop, using a bright, friendly style.”
- Batch from data: on a paid plan, “Autofill our ‘Event promo’ brand template for each of these five events” to make one design per row.
- Find and export: “Find last month’s newsletter header and export it as PNG.”
- Edit an existing design: “Change the date on the Spring Sale flyer to 12 April.”
- Collaborate: “Leave a comment on the pitch deck’s title slide asking for a new photo.”
How to set it up
- Check your Canva account. Canva’s guide warns that being signed in to the wrong Canva account is a common cause of connection failures.
- Open Claude’s settings. In Claude, go to Settings, then Connectors.
- Connect Canva. Find Canva in the list, select it, and follow the prompts to sign in and authorize.
- Turn it on in a chat. Start a new chat, open its settings, and under Connectors switch Canva on.
- Team plans: a Canva admin must allow the connector under Settings → Controls and Permissions before anyone on the team can connect.
Claude Code: Canva’s help pages don’t give Claude Code steps, so we don’t list a command here.
Watch out for
- Same permissions as Canva’s Connect API. Canva says that if your organization isn’t comfortable with that level of access, leave the connector off. A connected assistant can read, create and edit designs.
- AI credits run out. AI-powered actions may use monthly Canva AI credits and pause when credits run out or during a cooldown. Claude’s own message limits apply separately.
- Brand templates are limited to what’s shared with you.
- Autofill limits are coming. Canva says usage limits for Autofill will be introduced in the future.
- Turning it off breaks connections. If an admin disables the connector, existing connections stop working.
- Reconnecting. If something stops working, disconnect Canva in Claude and go through sign-in again.
Alternatives
- Figma MCP Server for product and app UI design rather than marketing graphics.
- Zapier MCP to post finished designs or schedule follow-ups across other apps.
- Hugging Face MCP for AI image generation through Hugging Face Spaces.
