Ask Claude for “a poster for our jazz night” with this skill on and you get a finished image file, PNG or PDF, plus a short text file explaining the visual idea behind it. The skill is built for art-like, mostly visual pieces, not for documents or slides.
What it does (plain English)
Canvas design works in two steps, and the order matters:
- Write a design philosophy. Claude invents a small “aesthetic movement” for your piece, in the spirit of a manifesto: how form, space, color and composition should behave. This becomes a Markdown file.
- Express it on a canvas. Claude then draws the piece with code, following its own philosophy. The skill aims for work that is about 90% visual and 10% essential text.
A final pass asks Claude to refine rather than add: tighten what is there instead of piling on more shapes. The skill is strict about craft, too. Nothing may overlap or fall off the page, and every element needs margins.
For lettering, the skill ships a canvas-fonts folder with 54 font files across families such as IBM Plex Serif, Lora, Work Sans, JetBrains Mono, Instrument Serif and Libre Baskerville, with an Open Font License file for each family. Claude picks from these rather than defaulting to system fonts.
| Output | Format |
|---|---|
| The artwork | One .png or .pdf (more pages on request) |
| The design idea | One .md file |
Is it for you?
Good fit for small businesses, event organizers, teachers and anyone who needs a striking one-off visual and does not have a designer on call. It is also a quick way to explore styles before briefing a human designer.
Not the right tool for brand-exact marketing assets, photos of real people or products, or anything with lots of text. The skill says to keep text minimal, and its instructions push toward abstract, systematic compositions. If you want a different feel, say so in your prompt.
What you can do with it
- Event poster. “Make an A3 poster for a community jazz night on 14 November. Mood: late night, warm, a bit worn.”
- Cover art. “Design cover art for my newsletter ‘Field Notes’, square, minimal text.”
- Multi-page set. “Make a 4-page PDF series in the same style, each page a different variation.” The skill has a multi-page option that treats pages like a small book.
- Explore directions. “Write two different design philosophies for a ceramics studio identity and render both.”
- Original work only. The skill tells Claude to create original designs and not to copy existing artists, to avoid copyright problems. Asking for “in the style of [living artist]” works against it.
How to set it up
claude.ai or the Claude desktop app
- Turn on Code execution and file creation in Settings > Capabilities. Claude draws the image with code, so this is required.
- Open Customize > Skills. The anthropics/skills README says its example skills are already available on paid plans; check From Anthropic & Partners.
- If you do not find it, download the
canvas-designfolder (with itscanvas-fontssubfolder), zip the folder itself and upload it in Customize > Skills. - Ask for your piece. Download the PNG or PDF from the chat.
Claude Code
- Run
/plugin marketplace add anthropics/skills - Run
/plugin install example-skills@anthropic-agent-skillsand choose a scope. - Ask: “Use the canvas-design skill to make a poster for …” The file is written into your project folder.
Claude Code estimates canvas-design at about 100 tokens always loaded and about 4k tokens when it runs. We ran the two install commands successfully in Claude Code 2.1.302 on 2026-10-18 but did not render a design.
Watch out for
- Fonts have their own license. The skill is Apache 2.0, but the bundled fonts each come with an SIL Open Font License file. That license is permissive, but keep the license text with the fonts if you redistribute them.
- Opinionated style. The instructions lean hard toward “museum-quality” abstract art. If you need something cheerful or commercial, describe that clearly.
- Text is a weak point by design. Keep headlines short and check every date, name and venue in the final image.
- Big ZIP. With 54 fonts, the folder is much larger than most skills. Make sure your upload includes the
canvas-fontsfolder, or Claude cannot use those fonts.
Alternatives
- Canva connector when you want an editable design in Canva rather than a flat image.
- PowerPoint skill for slide decks.
- Frontend design skill for web pages with the same “avoid the generic look” goal.
