  • Changing DNS records or Workers settings by asking
  • Looking up current Cloudflare documentation
  • Fetching pages and screenshots with Cloudflare's browser service

Quick install

Remote servers with OAuth; the recommended Cloudflare API server is at https://mcp.cloudflare.com/mcp

  1. claude.ai or Claude Desktop: Settings > Connectors > Add custom connector, URL https://mcp.cloudflare.com/mcp, then authorize in Cloudflare and select permissions.

  2. Claude Code:

claude mcp add --transport http cloudflare-api https://mcp.cloudflare.com/mcp

then run /mcp to sign in.

  3. Or install Cloudflare's skills plugin in Claude Code:

    /plugin marketplace add cloudflare/skills
  4. For docs only, use https://docs.mcp.cloudflare.com/mcp; for page fetching and screenshots, https://browser.mcp.cloudflare.com/mcp

What it does (plain English)

Cloudflare runs a family of hosted MCP servers. An MCP server is a plug-in that gives Claude a new ability; these give Claude access to your Cloudflare account and Cloudflare’s services.

The one Cloudflare recommends is the Cloudflare API MCP server at https://mcp.cloudflare.com/mcp. Cloudflare’s docs call it “the only MCP server you need to work with Cloudflare”: it reaches over 2,500 API endpoints across DNS, Workers, R2, D1, Zero Trust and more, and it searches Cloudflare’s developer docs.

It does this with very few tools, using a pattern Cloudflare calls Code Mode. Claude writes small JavaScript snippets that search the API spec and then call the right endpoint, and the code runs in an isolated sandbox on Cloudflare. Cloudflare’s own comparison:

ApproachToolsApprox. token cost
Native MCP, full schemas2,5941,170,523
Native MCP, required params only2,594244,047
Code Mode (default)3about 1,100

The tools are search, execute, docs and whoami.

There are also focused servers, including Documentation (https://docs.mcp.cloudflare.com/mcp), Browser Run for fetching pages, Markdown and screenshots (https://browser.mcp.cloudflare.com/mcp), Containers for sandbox dev environments, and the Cloudflare Blog.

Is it for you?

Pick it if your domain, website or Workers app is on Cloudflare and you’d rather say “add an A record” than find the right Dashboard screen. The docs server is useful on its own if you build on Cloudflare and want current answers.

If you’re new to Cloudflare and just want to publish a site, a hosting-focused tool like Netlify MCP or Vercel MCP is a gentler first step.

What you can do with it

Cloudflare’s own example prompts:

  • “List all my Workers”
  • “Create a KV namespace called ‘my-cache’”
  • “Add an A record for api.example.com pointing to 192.0.2.1”

And with the focused servers:

  • Docs: “Using Cloudflare docs, how do I cache JSON API responses in a Worker for five minutes?”
  • Browser Run: “Fetch my landing page as Markdown and take a screenshot.”

How to set it up

  1. claude.ai or Claude Desktop. Cloudflare’s docs list Claude among OAuth clients that can connect. Go to Settings > Connectors > Add custom connector and enter https://mcp.cloudflare.com/mcp. You’ll be sent to Cloudflare to authorize and choose permissions. Anthropic lists custom connectors for Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans.

  2. Claude Code. Cloudflare gives the URL; with Claude Code’s standard remote-server command:

claude mcp add --transport http cloudflare-api https://mcp.cloudflare.com/mcp

Run /mcp to complete the sign-in. (The command format is from Claude Code’s docs; the server name cloudflare-api matches Cloudflare’s example config.)

  3. Claude Code plugin. Cloudflare’s Skills plugin bundles its MCP servers with skills for Wrangler, Durable Objects, the Agents SDK and Workers best practices:

    /plugin marketplace add cloudflare/skills
  4. API token instead of OAuth (for automation): create a token at https://dash.cloudflare.com/profile/api-tokens with only the permissions you need and send it as a Bearer token. For account tokens, include Account Resources : Read so the server can detect your account ID.

  5. Focused servers. Add any of them the same way with their own URL, for example https://docs.mcp.cloudflare.com/mcp.

Watch out for

  • Claude can write real changes. DNS edits take effect quickly and can take a site offline. Grant only the permissions you need during OAuth, and keep tool approval on.
  • Results are capped. Each tool result is truncated at about 6,000 tokens by default and marked --- TRUNCATED ---. Ask narrower questions rather than turning the cap off.
  • “Claude’s response was interrupted.” Cloudflare’s troubleshooting says this usually means Claude hit its context limit after many chained tool calls; break the request into smaller steps.
  • Several servers are deprecated. AI Gateway, Audit Logs, AutoRAG, DNS Analytics, GraphQL, Logpush, Observability, Radar, Workers Bindings and Workers Builds servers are marked deprecated in favour of the API server.
  • Use /mcp, not /sse. The /sse URLs remain only as aliases for Streamable HTTP.

Alternatives

  • Vercel MCP or Netlify MCP if your site is hosted there.
  • Context7 for docs across many libraries, not only Cloudflare.
  • Playwright MCP to run a real browser locally instead of Cloudflare’s Browser Run service.
