This is the plugin store that comes with Claude Code. A plugin is a bundle that can add skills, slash commands, helper agents, hooks (commands that run automatically at set moments) and MCP servers to Claude Code in one install. The official marketplace is where Anthropic lists the plugins it maintains alongside plugins from partners and other authors.
What it does (plain English)
The marketplace is a GitHub repository, anthropics/claude-plugins-official, with one catalog file that lists every plugin. Claude Code registers it under the name claude-plugins-official the first time you start an interactive session, so you can install from it without any setup.
In the copy we checked on 2026-10-18, the catalog listed 315 plugins. The repository splits them into two folders plus outside links:
| Where the plugin lives | What it is | Count we saw |
|---|---|---|
/plugins | Developed and maintained by Anthropic | about 40 plugins |
/external_plugins | Partner and community plugins stored in the repo | 14 folders |
| Linked repositories | Partner plugins fetched from their own GitHub repos | the rest |
Anthropic’s own plugins include commit-commands (commit, push and pull request commands), code-review, feature-dev, pr-review-toolkit, security-guidance, skill-creator, frontend-design, plugin-dev and hookify. Partner plugins include playwright (described as an MCP server by Microsoft) and slack (from Slack’s own repository).
The catalog changes often, and Anthropic’s docs say they do not list it for that reason. Browse it in Claude Code’s Discover tab or on claude.com/marketplace, which shows install counts and marks some plugins Anthropic verified.
Is it for you?
Yes, if you use Claude Code at all. Start here before adding third-party marketplaces: Claude Code accepts the official marketplace names only from github.com/anthropics/ repositories, so a stranger’s catalog cannot pretend to be this one.
The marketplace itself does nothing until you install something from it. Plugins are a Claude Code (and Cowork) feature; in claude.ai chat you add plugins from Customize > Plugins instead, and chat ignores plugin parts it does not support, such as agents.
What you can do with it
- Tidy git work.
/plugin install commit-commands@claude-plugins-official, then/commit-commands:committo write and make a commit. - Get a code review. Install
code-reviewfor pull request reviews by several specialized agents. - Build a skill. Install
skill-creatorto write and test your own skills. - Connect a service. Install a vendor plugin such as
slack, which bundles Slack’s MCP server with skills and commands. - See the cost first. For official plugins, the details pane shows a Context cost: tokens added to every turn and tokens used when invoked.
How to set it up
Terminal
- Run
claudein your project folder. - Run
/plugin install <plugin-name>@claude-plugins-official. In a session this opens the plugin’s details instead of installing straight away. - Review Will install (commands, agents, skills, hooks, MCP and LSP servers) and pick a scope:
- Install for you (user scope): every project on this machine.
- Install for all collaborators on this repository (project scope): written to
.claude/settings.json, which you commit. - Install for you, in this repo only (local scope).
- If the summary says
Run /reload-plugins to apply, let it reload. - Confirm with
claude plugin listin your shell.
Claude desktop app
In a local or SSH session in the Code tab, click + next to the prompt box, choose Plugins, then Add plugin. Plugins you install at user scope in the terminal, desktop app or VS Code on one computer are shared, because they read the same settings files.
We added this marketplace and installed skill-creator, frontend-design and slack from it in Claude Code 2.1.302 on 2026-10-18; all three installs succeeded. We did not run them on a task.
Watch out for
- Plugins can run code. Anthropic’s security page says a plugin can execute arbitrary code on your machine with your user privileges. Hooks and MCP servers run outside Claude Code’s sandbox.
- “Official” is about the catalog, not every plugin. The repository README warns that Anthropic does not control the MCP servers, files or software inside plugins and cannot verify they will work as intended or won’t change. Read the details pane and the plugin’s homepage.
- Auto-update is on by default here. Files you reviewed can change in the background. Turn auto-update off per marketplace in
/plugin> Marketplaces if that worries you. - Avoid duplicates. The demo marketplace in
anthropics/claude-code(claude-code-plugins) contains many of the same plugins under the same names. Anthropic recommends installing fromclaude-plugins-official. - Cloud sessions are different. Sessions at claude.ai/code have no plugin browser and do not load plugins you installed on your own machine.
Alternatives
- Community marketplace:
/plugin marketplace add anthropics/claude-plugins-community, then install with@claude-community. These are third-party plugins submitted to Anthropic. - Knowledge work plugins, Anthropic’s role-based plugins for sales, legal, finance and more.
- wshobson/agents and VoltAgent subagents, large third-party catalogs.
