What it does (plain English)

Stripe’s MCP server (a plug-in that gives Claude a new ability) connects Claude to your Stripe account. Claude can look up customers, charges, refunds, invoices and subscriptions; create products, prices, coupons and payment links; and search Stripe’s documentation and support articles. Stripe hosts it at https://mcp.stripe.com.

Instead of hundreds of separate tools, most of the API is reached through a few general ones, which keeps Claude’s context small:

ToolWhat it does
stripe_api_searchFind the right Stripe API method by keyword
stripe_api_detailsGet the parameters for that method
stripe_api_readRun any supported GET request
stripe_api_writeRun supported POST, PATCH, PUT and DELETE requests
search_stripe_documentationSearch Stripe’s docs
stripe_implementation_plannerWalk through which Stripe products fit what you’re building

There are also preview tools for analytics and Treasury money movement, and atlas_company_formation for starting a Delaware company with Stripe Atlas.

Is it for you?

Pick it if you sell something through Stripe and want quick answers (“who are my ten biggest customers this quarter?”) or want to set up products and payment links without clicking through the Dashboard. It also helps when you’re adding Stripe to an app with Claude Code, because the docs-search and planner tools give current guidance.

Be cautious with a live account. This server can create refunds and change subscriptions. Start by connecting a sandbox (Stripe’s test environment) during the OAuth step, and only add live mode when you trust your prompts.

What you can do with it

  • Business questions: “List subscriptions that were cancelled this month and the plan each was on.”
  • Set up a product: “Create a product called ‘Pro plan’ with a monthly price of $19 and a payment link for it.”
  • Run a promotion: “Create a 20% coupon for 3 months and a promotion code LAUNCH20.”
  • Support lookups: “Find the customer with email jane@example.com and show her last three charges.”
  • Plan an integration: “I want to sell a one-off digital download. Which Stripe products should I use?” (uses stripe_implementation_planner).

How to set it up

  1. claude.ai or Claude Desktop. Open the official Stripe connector in Claude’s directory, select Connect to Claude, and add it to your account or workspace. Sign in to Stripe in the OAuth window.

  2. Pick environments carefully. On Stripe’s consent page you can grant access to one or more live accounts or sandboxes, with different permissions for each.

  3. Turn it on per chat. Select the plus icon, then Connectors, and enable Stripe.

  4. Team and Enterprise plans: an owner must add the connector to the workspace before members can connect their own Stripe accounts.

  5. Claude Code:

claude mcp add --transport http stripe https://mcp.stripe.com/

Start Claude Code and run /mcp to authenticate with OAuth. Or install Stripe’s plugin, which configures the server and adds Stripe’s skills and keeps them updated:

    claude plugin install stripe@claude-plugins-official
  6. No OAuth? Use an agent API key in .mcp.json via an environment variable, as Stripe’s docs show, rather than pasting the key on the command line.

Watch out for

  • Human confirmation for risky writes. Stripe requires you to approve certain stripe_api_write actions, such as refunds and outbound payments, through a link the agent gives you. Approvals expire after 24 hours.
  • Turn on tool approval in Claude. Stripe recommends reviewing tool calls before they run, and warns about prompt injection when Stripe MCP is used alongside other servers.
  • Key deadline: November 30, 2026. From December, Stripe MCP stops accepting full-access secret keys and restricted keys without the Agent tag. Switch to agent API keys or OAuth.
  • Revoking access. Your connected clients appear under OAuth sessions in your Stripe user settings, where you can revoke them. Admins can turn MCP access on or off for the whole team, separately for live and sandbox.
  • Managed networks may block mcp.stripe.com; ask IT to allow it.

Alternatives

  • Zapier MCP if you only need simple Stripe actions chained to other apps (for example, “new customer, then send a Slack message”).
  • Airtable MCP to keep a customer list Claude can edit without touching billing.
  • Supabase MCP or Neon MCP if the data you want lives in your own app database rather than Stripe.
